U-M Baseball Great Bud Chamberlain Passes Away
Sept. 26, 2012
B. F. "Bud" Chamberlain, a former Michigan baseball star and member of the Michigan Hall of Honor, died on August 24, 2012 at the age of 92. Chamberlain attended the University of Michigan from 1938 to 1942.
He was coached by Ray L. Fisher and found himself in the starting lineup at third base in his first season of varsity play as a sophomore. By his junior year, he had earned a reputation as the "Finest fielding third baseman" in the Big Ten. That same year, his final batting average was a healthy .352 and he led U-M in RBIs while hitting game winning home runs against Western Michigan and Purdue. He also won the Big Ten batting title in 1942. Chamberlain was inducted into the Michigan Hall of Honor in 1982.
Chamberlain had been spotted by Wish Egan, the Detroit Tigers scout, when he was at Royal Oak (Mich.) High School and was followed by the scouts throughout his college career. Unfortunately for baseball, he enlisted in the Naval Reserve after college, earning a Bronze Star for his military duty in World War II. After the war and five years in the Navy, Chamberlain launched a stellar career in real estate and insurance. He eventually started Chamberlain Real Estate in 1948.
On September 25, 1973, the mayor of Royal Oak proclaimed the day "B.F. Chamberlain Day" while the State of Michigan issued a Special Tribute to him in 1994 for his active involvement in state and national issues.
In 1997, Royal Oak High School inducted Chamberlain into its Hall of Fame. In high school, he participated in football, basketball and baseball and won nine varsity letters.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Royal Oak.
