ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team held its annual postseason banquet Saturday (Feb. 4) at the Junge Family Champions Center, where head coach Greg Ryan announced the team captains for the 2012 season and handed out several team awards.
The team captains for 2012, as voted on by the team, will be fifth-year seniors Clare Stachel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) and senior/junior Holly Hein (Castaic, Calif./West Ranch).
Stachel will serve as captain for the third year, while it will be the second time for Kopmeyer. Hein, who played in only six games before redshirting due to her battle with thyroid cancer, will take her first turn wearing the yellow armband. Stachel was an All-Big Ten second team selection last season, while Kopmeyer set the program record for most saves in a season (115).
Ryan also announced the winners of seven awards from last season:
Offensive MVP: Nkem Ezurike
Defensive MVP: Haley Kopmeyer
Most Improved Player: Kayla Mannino, Jen Pace
Rookie of the Year: Christina Murillo, Jen Pace, Chloe Sosenko
Coaches Award: Courtney Mercier
Maize & Blue Award (given to most team-oriented player): Clare Stachel
Lloyd Carr Award (given to player who best represents Michigan ideals): Karin Thomas
